Sports In The Area

Fell walking

Fell walking (not to be confused with rambling) is free to all in the Lakes. There is a wide range of fells and crags to test you on, but beware, the high peaks are not for beginners or inexperienced walkers so take advice on routes and appropriate equipment. There are many good books on fell walking, none more famous than those by Alfred Wainright (AW), that offer advice on some challenging and scenic routes.

Golf
There are several good quality courses within the national park from Penrith and Keswick in the north to Kendal and Ulverston in the south. In the far north west of Cumbria there is Silloth-on-Solway, which is one of the finest links courses in the country (not for the faint hearted on a windy day).

Windermere golf club is just up the road from the Waverley and offers some superb golf as well as stunning views across the lake and the fells beyond.

Fishing
The Lakes are famous for fishing waters and the Windermere and Ambleside District Anglers Association have some of the finest. Both game and course fishing can be enjoyed within easy reach of the Waverley.A day or weekly permit can be bought from the post office in Windermere and then the choice is yours.

Freezer space is available for bait or your catch if you are successful.
If you would like to have your freshly caught trout for dinner, Alison will be more than happy to cook your catch for you. At right is Waveley regular Tony Smith with a Grasmere pike.

Mountain Biking

At the Waverley we can offer you a large secure lock up within the hotel so your bikes are safe overnight. You can also hire bikes from several outlets in the area.

Maps and guidebooks are readily available from Windermere Tourist Information Centre. We can take small parties of bikers up to 8 in number.

Off Road 4x4
This is your chance to take part in a spectacular off-road adventure to remember with Kankku. You will journey on the ultimate four-wheel drive expedition, along routes few visitors venture, to explore the most remote and breathtakingly beautiful regions of the English lakes.

Horse riding
There are a number of equestrian centres in the area offering a wide variety of activites:

Lakeland Riding Centre
Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE APPROPRIATE INSURANCE
BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY OF THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES
